How long have you worked with the Fifteen Cornwall Apprenticeship Programme?
I’ve had the great pleasure working on this project since day one and cohort one, during which I have seen some talented young chefs pass through the programme, some interesting characters and some truly inspirational young people.
What is your job role?
I am a College Trainer delivering VRQ1 AND NVQ2 professional cooking qualifications. VRQ1 is where the apprentices start their journey with Cornwall College and Fifteen Cornwall, along with a certificate in food hygiene. That part of the process is really intense and they have to complete the qualification in just four months.
How does the College link in with the training at Fifteen Cornwall?
Since the start of this project we have worked together to shape and mould the project, which now fits like hand in glove. We as a team work hard for the best for the Fifteen candidates and their futures.
Where is the College located?
We have seven sites across Cornwall including Saltash, Stoke Climsland, Newquay, St Austell, Falmouth, Rosewarne and Camborne. The Cornwall College site in Camborne is where the Fifteen recruits come for their training.
How will I get to college?
The College runs a number of coach services to and from the Camborne campus; there is also extensive parking on-site and a regular bus service runs past the main entrance.
Will my equipment be provided?
Cornwall College and the team at Fifteen Cornwall will provide you with full whites and books to get you started on your new and exciting career, so all you need to do is be willing to learn.
Do I need to have any qualifications prior to coming on the course?
You don’t need any formal qualifications to take the course, but the ability to work in a team is a real benefit. We not only work with the apprentices on their cookery skills, but we also help them to gain a recognised qualification in maths and English.
What qualifications will I leave with once I have graduated?
VRQ1, NVQ2, Food Safety Level 2, Functional Skills in English and maths.
Are there any other courses or qualifications I will complete?
There are always opportunities to further your studies; they include patisserie qualifications and larder management. The world is your oyster and we want to help you thrive.
What kinds of things will I learn whilst at college?
You will learn all of the qualifications you’ll need to get you started in your catering career, a whole host of techniques and the science behind the food. Not only this but you’ll also learn how to work quickly in a team and under the pressure of tight deadlines.
Who will be teaching me?
We are a team of friendly and professional staff who care about you and your future; we have world class facilities, including our fine dining restaurant, Trevenson, which was opened in June at the cost of £3.4 million
Will the class be just Fifteen Cornwall students or mixed?
During lessons it will be just fifteen students, but out of time spent in the class room there is an opportunity to interact with students from other courses around the campus.
How many days a week will I attend college?
You will be full time at college for the first four months whilst you study the VRQ1 and then one day a week at college during level 2.
If you could give us three qualities you look for in an apprentice chef what would you say?
I’m looking for someone who can show respect for their team and their teachers, someone who is extremely hard working and willing to keeping going, no matter what is happening outside of the Fifteen and College programme.
Are there any other opportunities to continue my studies after I graduate?
After the apprenticeship you have a number of options, including further study on our level 3 programmes which can progress onto one of the degree courses offered by Cornwall College.
